When you want to know literally anything, where do you turn to?

The library? Pfft, last century maybe.

Your friends? Sometimes they know just as much as you do.

Your parents? Not unless you’re desperate!

Let me guess, it’s Google, right?

Of course it is. Because you know you’re likely going to find what you’re looking for. That’s probably how you found this article.

Now, what if you could do the same when it came to deciding what to wear to a social event?

That’s what I’m here for. Go ahead, name the occasion.

Wedding? Concert? First date? Baby Shower?

If you’ve got a social event coming up, I can tell you exactly what to wear to it.

In this multi-part series, I’ll share my practical tips for choosing an outfit for damn near every social event. Whatever you need, I’ve got it covered.

Part 1 is all about parties and going out. So, without further adieu...

What to Wear to a Concert

You can’t beat a good concert in the summertime.

I love dancing like a maniac to my favorite music, surrounded by all my friends. And discovering new music among a sea of complete strangers.

There’s an energy you experience that’s irreplicable.

But, when there’s a few dates marked on your calendar, your outfits start to run pretty dry.

No matter what kind of music you’re into, The Every Girl has a few outfit ideas that hit all the right notes.

Graphic Tee + Fun Bottoms

Graphic tee mini skirt

Is your favorite band playing? Show off your undying love with one of their graphic tees and pair it with a fun bottom.

It’s an outfit you can easily wear again and again even after the concert’s over. But it looks that much better when you’re rocking out to some music.

Black + White + Denim

Denim jacket

If you know anything about French Style, you’ll know the key to looking effortlessly chic is to keep things simple.

This is a combination you can easily mix and match for outfits as endless as your summer gig list.

Leather + Breezy Top

Leather is a quick and easy way to create a chic rocker outfit but a breezy top will help balance things out in the summer heat.

Bright Colored Skirt + White Top

bright colored skirt

Like all concerts, outdoor ones are about having fun. But when you have the freedom to move about or enjoy an evening picnic, it’s the perfect excuse to wear something a little more casual.

No outfit does that better than a bold colored skirt paired with a minimal white top.

White Dress + Leather

White dress

Just because you’re into grunge doesn’t mean you have to go all in. Pair you Doc Martens with a more feminine silhouette to strike the right balance for summer.

White Tee + Heels

You can’t go wrong with jeans and a white tee. For literally anything. But if you’re worried it might be a bit too basic, try wearing a pair of metallic heels to jazz up your look.

Dress Up

one shoulder bodysuit

Don’t be afraid to dress it up a little if you think the occasion calls for it. An off-the-shoulder top is a great way to add some style without feeling overdressed.

Who knows, maybe you’ll get spotted in the crowd and invited to come up on stage! Just sayin’.

Speaking of dressed up, a jumpsuit can feel super dressed up or down depending on how you wear it.

Wear some fancy heels or a pair of sandals. It’s up to you!

What to Wear to First Dates

There are few occasions where the term dress to impress applies more than when you’re deciding what to wear to impress a guy (wardrobe panic ensues!).

To me, picking an outfit for a date is like watching Jeopardy.

When you’re sitting comfortably at home, all the answers just come to you. But when you’re actually there, looking Alex right in the eyes, all of a sudden things become a lot more complicated.

The Every Girl suggests a few general rules about what to wear to first dates:

  1. Check out the venue ahead of time to get a feel for the place
  2. Choose a color or outfit that always garners compliments
  3. Dress comfortably
  4. Pick one asset to show off

To elaborate on that last point, that could mean wearing a strapless maxi dress to show off your arms or a short skirt to show off your legs. But pick one.

What to Wear to a Casual Coffee Date

Jeans and t-shirt

Keep it as the occasion implies, casual. That means jeans, converse or flats and t-shirts.

If you feel compelled to dress up a little more, however, a simple dress with a jacket is just as good when paired with either flats or wedges.

What to Wear to Dinner

The rule of dress for comfort still applies here. But simply adding some statement jewelry or a fun accessory will help you stand out in a more formal setting.

For a dressy dinner date, I’d go for a shift dress or maybe a silk cami with skinny jeans, as well as a blazer with some heels.

For more casual dinner dates, boyfriend jeans and a cute blouse are your best bet.

What to Wear to an After-Work Drinks Date

Skirt and jacket

Keep things office appropriate and date night ready with a dress or skirt with a feminine top under a jacket. Just leave the jacket and your big work bag at the office and bring a clutch instead.

What to Wear to the Movies

Pleated skirt

A pleated maxi skirt is a perfect blend of date night formalness and loose, flowy comfort. Whether you’re sitting in the theater or a barstool afterwards.

If you can’t find the right top to go with your skirt, opt for a silhouette-hugging wrap dress instead. And stay cozy with a leather jacket.

Not feeling skirts or dresses? A pair of wide-leg palazzo pants is the closest thing you can get to sitting on the sofa in your sweats.

Most important of all when deciding what to wear to a first date, be yourself and wear what makes YOU feel good. Wear your outfit with confidence and it will show through in you.

What to Wear to a Club

There’s nothing like letting off a little steam on a Friday or Saturday night after a long, hard week at work. And for some of us, that means hitting the clubs.

When you’re choosing what to wear to a club, it’s your opportunity to finally break free of your rigid office attire and express yourself. The feeling is totally liberating. And so is the alcohol!

The Trend Spotter says the key to deciding what to wear to clubs is to find a look that strikes the right balance between chic and comfortable.

Bodycon skirts, jeans and a cute top, jumpsuits⸺they’re all on the table.

faux leather skirt

I would recommend a sheer top and a mini skirt. But if you want to keep things casual, a crop top and cargo pants with some boots are your best bet.

For a fancier outfit, go for a bodycon dress or jumpsuit with high heels.

Dress it Down

Suit co-ord

Just because you’re going to a club, doesn’t mean you have to wear a dress. A button-up, whether it’s undone or not, with a pair of jeans is a fantastic option.

In summer, wear a sheer top with a bralette underneath or rock a suit co-ord for a truly polished aesthetic.

In winter, just throw on a large coat over your lighter club attire.

Platform heels

Heels and boots are an easy choice for nightclub wear. And since there’s basically no rules to what you can wear, why not go all out with wild styles and shades of color?

If you’re a dancing machine like me (sorry to everyone whose feet I've stepped on!), go for some chunky platforms, strappy stilettos or classic pumps. Just make sure they’re comfortable!

Otherwise some simple sneakers will do just fine.

What to Wear to a Bar

Similar to dressing for clubs, dressing for bars requires achieving the perfect balance between style and comfort.

As a matter of fact, USA Today says that you can never go wrong with a pair of jeans. Like, ever. And even if you want to look classy and polished, a pair of dark skinny jeans will do the trick.

Who What Wear says everything else for what to wear to a bar is usually sitting right in your closet.

If you love wearing denim jackets, an embellished or embroidered denim jacket is a fantastic piece to wear out at night. And it’s guaranteed to send more than a few compliments your way.

Faux Leather Skirt

During the day, a faux leather skirt will amp up a simple sweater and sneakers. When it’s happy hour, a cool bodysuit or sheer top will complement your skirt perfectly.

Slip Dress

A slip dress is really a catch all⸺so don’t get caught without one!

Wear it with a t-shirt and sneakers to a coffee date. For an evening date at the bar, ditch the t-shirt and sneakers for some strappy heels and a statement bag.

If in doubt, this is what to wear to a bar. Enough said.

Knit Dress

At first glance, a knit dress might seem too casual. But pair it with some boots and you’ve got yourself an outfit that’s up to code.

Speaking of shoes⸺don’t expend too much energy thinking about this. Most bars are dark and crowded to the point where you can barely even see your feet.

Do wear comfortable shoes though, there’s no guarantee that you’ll find a seat!

What to Wear to a Party

Who What Wear says if you’re going to a house party, that doesn’t mean you can’t dress like you’re going out.

In fact, I would say house parties are actually a great opportunity to experiment with your outfits. Even though you’re in the comfort of someone’s home, it’s still an occasion nonetheless.

Of course, the formality of the occasion has some say over what you should wear as well. What to wear to a birthday party for your best friend is totally different from what to wear to a birthday party for your mom.

Either way, you should come out with some diverse, new outfits.

Sweatshirt + Pleated Skirt + Heels

A party calls for something fun and playful. And what could be more fun than a striking skirt paired with a casual sweatshirt. Strappy heels are a nice finishing touch.

Blazer + White Tee + Black Leather Pants

Leather pants are a chic piece for party wear regardless of whether the dress code is formal or more relaxed. Pair them with a white tee and a blazer for all out chic style.

Statement Blazer + Jeans

Oversize blazer

Speaking of blazers, a bold color completes any jeans and t-shirt look.

Patterned Blouse + Jeans + Heels

Make a statement with some voluminous sleeves and a fun print paired with your tried and true jeans and heels.

Leather Jacket + Silky Skirt

For fall style that never fails, wear a silk maxi skirt with your trusty leather jacket.

Slip Dress + Leather Jacket + Ankle Boots

As I said before, slip dresses are a catch all.

They can elegantly walk the line between casual and dressy. Pair yours with a leather jacket and ankle boots.

Patterned Midi Dress + Sneakers

This look says I’m here to have fun. And you will because you’ll be ready for whatever the party throws at you.

What to Wear to Brunch

Who doesn’t love brunch? It’s the best of both worlds. Gossip and Instagrammable goodies. Oh yeah, there’s also food thrown in there somewhere.

Usually brunch is a pretty laid back affair. In fact, the only thing tougher than deciding what to order, is deciding what to wear to brunch.

What even are the rules? Are there any? Let’s break things down by occasion.

What to Wear to Brunch in Winter

The Trend Spotter pointed out that while the cafe will likely be warm and cozy in winter, you’ll still need to layer up for the journey there.

A thick jumper, jacket or coat is essential.

A camel coat paired with jeans and a t-shirt makes for an easy, chic ensemble. Crank up the heat a little with a leopard or check print.

What to Wear to Brunch in Summer

floral maxi dress

Just like in winter, summer brunch is all about getting the balance right between style and comfort.

Loose dresses, skirts and shorts made from lightweight materials like cotton and chiffon are ideal for keeping cool.

Add fun and fashionable prints, bold colors and playful accessories. I’d suggest something like a floral maxi dress with espadrilles and a straw bag.

What to Wear to a Casual Brunch

oversize sweater

Let’s say you indulged in some⸺let’s call them 'late evening activities.' And you promised your friend you’d meet for brunch the next morning.

Canceling is out of the question. You already canceled and rescheduled a dozen times. But you can’t possibly muster a dressy outfit either.

Luckily, some sneakers, jeans and an oversize sweater can quickly help you look put together. Even if you’re not feeling like it on the inside. A loose t-shirt dress will work just as well.

What to Wear to a Formal Brunch

Have friends in high places? Try an outfit that’s elevated yet easygoing, like an unstructured and feminine suit. Or a chic dress.

Accessorize with kitten heels and a statement bag for a look that walks the fine line between business and leisure.

What to Wear to the Beach

Deciding what to wear to the beach sounds simple. Just wear a swimsuit.

But you’re not going to the beach in just your swimsuit, are you? You’d have to be a real beach bum (I mean that in an endearing way) to pull that off.

Dressing for the beach is a little more complicated. The Trend Spotter suggests a few of these cute and casual beach ideas.

Beach Day Outfits

beach dress

Need to work on your tan? Choose an outfit that's comfortable, casual and fun.

Partner your bikini with something easy to throw over the top like a beach dress and accessorize with a straw tote to carry your towel, book, sunscreen⸺whatever you need!

Sexy Beach Outfits

beach cover up

Got a hot date at the beach? Put away the cute printed one-piece.

Choose a flattering black bikini and cover up with either a sheer chiffon sarong or crochet dress.

Add some extra sun-smart style with a wide-brim hat and aviators.

Boho Beach Outfit

boho dress

Bohemian outfits were made for sand and sun! Play up to the role with prints and unique textures.

Keep things simple with a printed bikini paired with denim cut-offs and a crocheted top. Throw on some gladiator sandals to finish the look.

Dressy Beach Outfits

striped dress

Whether it's a picnic with friends or cocktails down by the beach front, a dressy beach outfit is essential. A stylish dress works best.

Choose something fashionable that matches the relaxed beach vibes like a striped dress or an off-the-shoulder style. Add some chic accessories in natural colors.

Cute Beach Outfit

lightweight dress

Cute beach outfits are easy to create. Have some fun and try your hand at this look by starting with a chic bikini in a bright color. Then cover up with a lightweight dress over the top.

A straw hat and bag will complete the ensemble.
