There you are in the clothing store, casually browsing the garments.

The eagle-eyed store assistants watch on as you continue to browse, blissfully unaware.

Just when you think you’ve seen enough, you catch something in the corner of your eye. Your head turns so fast it nearly falls off.

There it is. The dress you didn’t know you needed until right now.

Without hesitation, you rip the dress right off the rack.

But then you notice the store assistants in the background murmuring something among themselves. You can't quite make out what they're saying. Maybe they think the dress won't fit you.

Pfft, you know how to dress yourself.

You confidently storm the fitting rooms and quickly try to remove your own clothes as they hold onto you like a clingy boyfriend.

You take a deep breath before checking yourself out in the mirror only to realize⸺oh god, it looks terrible on you.

Sigh, it's a common issue many women face. But with a little advice from yours truly, I can show you how to dress your hourglass body shape right!

What is an Hourglass Body Shape?

Sheknows says you have an hourglass body shape if:

  • Your hips and shoulders are roughly the same width
  • Your shoulders are round and sloping
  • You have a well-defined waistline
  • You have good cleavage
  • Your butt is quite round
  • Your lower hips are wider than your high hips
  • Your thighs are full but narrower than your lower hips
  • You tend to gain weight around the hips and above the waist

This might be the most desirable body shape of all. You lucky devil.

How to Dress An Hourglass Figure

According to 40+STYLE, you have a very feminine body, so you’ll want to accentuate all the right places with fitted clothes. And elongate your legs.

You’re already well proportioned, so your goal is to maintain that balance and avoid adding unnecessary bulk.

How to Dress Your Upper Body

The most important thing you can do is wear a good bra. You want a bra that will thrust your bust forwards.

Other clothing you should wear includes:

  • V necklines or tops with a deep neckline
  • Coats that highlight your waist and feature a v-neck
  • Single-breasted jackets left open to create a nice vertical line
  • Shirts that emphasize your boobs and that don’t have buttons all the way to the top
  • Small, fitted jackets that tuck in your boobs

How to Dress Your Lower Body

You want to emphasize your curves when picking out skirts and pants, so choose pencil skirts because they will follow your curves perfectly.

For pants, choose bootcut and flared styles to complement your curves too.

What Are the Best Dresses for Hourglass Figure?

Successible Life suggests the best dress shape for curvy figure women are bodycon dresses, wrap dresses and mermaid dresses.

It makes sense, you’ve got all them curves, so flaunt ‘em! Just make sure the dress sits well in all the right places.

When you’re looking for a dress, you should also consider v-neck, sweetheart or scoop necklines because they will slim down your bust and draw attention to your waist.

WhoWhatWear suggests having a belted waist will also help you create the perfect silhouette.

bodycon mini dres

I really like this bodycon dress because it's so simple but elegant. And it hugs your body in all the right places.

The open neckline does a great job to show off your cleavage and because the fabric tucks under your boobs, it helps emphasize them a little more.

One of my philosophies is that you should always focus on one body part to show off and although this dress does give your cleavage some attention, I think the main focus point is still your legs, especially because the long sleeves cover up your arms.

All in all, it's a really sexy but classy dress that's perfect for a girls night out. You'll definitely draw a lot of confidence from wearing it.

mermaid hem polka dot dress

This mermaid hem dress has a lot of things going for it. First of all, polka dots! I mean, come on.

But what I really love about this dress is the other little details like the square neckline. Although it doesn't really show your cleavage, it's a subtly classy way to show off some skin without really giving too much away.

The belt around the waist is perfect for hourglass shaped women because it really emphasizes your waist and the beautiful mermaid hem is like a continuation of your curves. A nice extra little detail.

This dress is perfect for a semi-formal occasion, it's so fun and classy.

off the shoulder bodycon dress

If you really want to make a statement with your next outfit, this dress is the way to go.

The dress speaks for itself but I think this off-the-shoulder style would look amazing with a statement necklace, too.

Wrap dresses are perfect hourglass figures and this color is guaranteed to steal all the attention at a cocktail event. You'll be blushing with all the attention that you'll be getting.
